Cotton vs. Recycled Plastic: Who Wins?

We often wonder which, between cotton and plastic, pollutes our planet the least?
At first glance, we might think that cotton, being natural, is better for the planet and that plastic should be banned from the bedding industry.

Find out in this article who will be the big winner: cotton or plastic.

First of all, cotton is an inexpensive material to purchase compared to other natural fibers like hemp or linen. It's also a pleasant fabric against the skin and easy to maintain. While it has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages that we can't ignore.

As for its drawbacks, cotton cultivation is harmful to the environment. Indeed, during its life cycle, cotton receives numerous chemical treatments due to its sensitivity to several pests. These pesticides will be released into the world and impact waterways, local biodiversity, and the population. In addition, the cotton plant requires a lot of water; it consumes no less than 10,000 liters for just 1 kilo of cotton.

After harvesting, cotton is naturally processed, from bleaching to dyeing with chemicals. When the cotton is finally usable, it is then imported to other countries around the world, adding to its carbon footprint.

As for plastic, most people see it as a highly polluting material for us and the planet. Indeed, this is a reality.

However, at La Couette Française we took the risk of not pleasing everyone and chose plastic as one of our main materials.

Concerned about our planet, we wanted to combine premium quality across all our products by adopting eco-responsible manufacturing. In fact, all our products are made from 100% recycled plastic found in the oceans.

Our goal is to use products that already exist on our planet and not to harm animals by taking their fur (wool for example) and mistreating them at the same time.

According to the article "Marine Waste" published on November 14, 2023 by ecologie.gouv.fr, "it is currently estimated that the amount of plastic in the oceans is between 75 and 199 million tons." Since the launch of La Couette Française, 184,152 tons of plastic waste have been recycled through the manufacturing of our products.

We realize this number is tiny compared to the millions of tons of plastic already in the oceans. But it's by taking action on our own scale that we can further help the planet become a better place.

It is also in the manufacturing of our products that we pay attention to the environment by using 100% renewable energy sources.
